Orthodontic treatment explained

You can find the answers to many of the initial questions you might have about braces in this helpful FAQ, courtesy of leading orthodontic specialists Six Month Smiles.

Six Month Smiles

Q: How does the treatment work so fast?

A: The system has been designed using the latest technology. The braces are made from a special form of nickel and titanium, which cause the teeth to move into the correct position quickly, without causing any pain or discomfort. The Six Month Smiles system is designed to treat patients with minor orthodontic problems, which affect the teeth which are visible when you smile. This means the brace focuses only on the front teeth, which reduces treatment time.

Q: Is the treatment suitable for everyone?

A: The treatment is not suitable for everyone but it can be used to treat a range of orthodontic problems. The treatment is designed to treat problems which affect the teeth at the front of the mouth so that the appearance of the smile is improved. Six Month Smiles can be highly effective in treating patients with orthodontic problems, including crooked teeth, minor spacing between the teeth, and minor problems relating to the bite (the way the upper and lower sets of teeth fit together when the jaw is relaxed). If you have more complex orthodontic problems or issues which affect your back teeth, you may be advised to opt for an alternative treatment, which will provide greater movement.

Q: Why should I choose 6 Month Smiles short term ortho system?

A: Six Month Smile braces offer an incredible opportunity to patients who want to change the appearance of their smile without having to wear uncomfortable metal braces for a long period of time. The braces are discreet and comfortable and will give you the smile you've always wanted in just six short months.
Six Month Smiles are also much cheaper than traditional braces and treatment time is obviously much shorter than most other orthodontic treatments.

Q: Is the treatment suitable for teenagers?

A: As a general rule, some dentists prefer to use different treatments for younger patients, as their teeth are still developing and moving. However, the Six Month Smile system may be suitable for some teenagers over the age of 15. If you are interested in the treatment and want to know more about it, arrange a consultation and we can discuss the treatment with you and determine whether you are a suitable candidate.

Q: Are the braces painful?

A: The braces are made from special forms of nickel and titanium and are much finer and lighter than traditional braces. They generate gentle forces that cause the teeth to move quickly without exerting extreme pressure on the teeth, which could otherwise cause pain and discomfort.
Initially, when you first have the braces fitted you may experience mild pain and discomfort. However, this should soon wear off as you get used to the braces. You can take over the counter pain relief to ease the pain and make you feel more comfortable.

Q: Are the braces obvious?

A: Six Month Smile braces are not invisible but they are extremely discreet. They are much finer than conventional metal braces and the brackets and wires are designed to match the colour of the teeth, meaning they look subtle.

Q: Will I have to wear a retainer after the treatment is complete?

A: We advise all orthodontic patients to wear a retainer for a period of time after treatment. This is to ensure the teeth are held in the correct position and reduce the risk of relapse. There are a variety of different options when it comes to choosing a retainer and we will ensure that you get the best possible retainer for your individual needs.

Q: Will the braces affect my speech?

A: To begin with, you may find that your speech is mildly affected by wearing braces. However, this will soon subside and you will be able to speak normally. Six Month Smiles do not affect speech any more severely than other types of braces.
